Hello Bend! Nancy P’s Cafe & Bakery has been nestled in Bend’s Westside for 19 years. This little, cozy Bend mainstay opened its doors in April 2001 by Nancy Pfeiffer and her husband Steve. Ten years later, Nancy decided to hand-off the mixing bowl to Katy Clabough and her baker-husband, Tommy. In October of 2011, Katy and Tommy, who had been customers since Nancy P’s Cafe opened their doors, jumped at the opportunity to carry on the name and reputation of their favorite neighborhood cafe. They feel proud and honored to call this special place their own. We love Nancy P’s so much, and want to spread the word and support this amazing local cafe and bakery, that we are giving away a $50 gift card to someone this week for Mother’s Day! (Read to the bottom for details on how to enter)!
I’ve recently discovered this scrumptious “Bend Original” eatery through their delicious shortbread cookies. A friend of mine, Charissa, introduced me to them. Raving about Nancy P’s Cafe, she told me she orders their beautifully decorated shortbread cookies “several times a year and they never disappoint.” In fact, Charissa loves them so much, she orders them for all special occasions, gives them as birthday gifts, and orders themed soccer and basketball cookies for her kid’s sports teams. “We have also ordered from Nancy P’s Cafe for our company parties; getting a variety of lemon bars, cookies and many other yummy desserts they have in their case,” says Charissa.
Nancy P’s serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week featuring house made baked goods–both sweet and savory. “Our breakfast pockets, quiche, frittata, hand-boiled bagels, homemade soups, sandwiches and delicious salads are some of our family favorites!! We are well known for our incredible fruit filled pies, custom cakes and shortbread cookies. We feature local coffee from Bellatazza, Metolius Tea and My Chai”, says Nancy P’s Cafe owner, Katy.
Their website gives you a glimpse into what breakfast might look like at Nancy P’s Cafe: “Visit our cozy cafe and start your morning off with a specialty coffee and a homemade pastry. Or grab one of our famous savory pastry pockets filled with eggs, cheese and your choice of veggies, ham or bacon. Eat inside or on our dog-friendly garden patio or grab it on your way to work or the mountain. Either way you’ll be fueled for your day.”
After indulging in my first shortbread cookie, I started to discover how well-known and loved this quaint little Westside cafe is to those “in the know” here in Bend. My neighbor, David, is obsessed and calls it a favorite spot for a date with one or all of his kiddos. “Nancy P’s has become my treat to myself every Friday morning! In my humble opinion, they have the best scones in Central Oregon. The maple brown sugar scone is my favorite. Or, if i’m in a savory mood, the bacon, egg & cheese pocket is ridiculously tasty! Combine this with the delicious Bellatazza coffee they serve, the quaint cozy atmosphere, great artwork and friendly service. Nancy P’s has pretty much nailed it! My wife and I have a running joke every Friday morning that I’m going to see “Nancy” again, but she gets it!” says David.
Healthy Lunch Options
For lunch, they have something for everyone. Their sandwich bread is baked in house and loaded with hand sliced, quality meats and cheeses. Their crisp salads are piled high with tons of veggies and fresh ingredients to satisfy even the heartiest appetite! If there’s a chill in the air, their hearty, house made soups are sure to please. Better yet, mix and match and order a little of each.
Another friend of mine recently experienced Nancy P’s Cafe, and this is what she had to say: “I visited Nancy P’s for the first time the other day–and BOY did they deliver! Not only are the staff taking extra precautions due to the virus, but they were kind, jovial, and their food was OUT OF THIS WORLD! It was just the absolute perfect way to start my day. The marionberry scone was the best I’ve ever had–I recommend getting there early–I watched them take it off the cooling rack and straight into my hands! 10/10 recommend–I’ve already been there twice more this week!” -Libby W
Supporting Local Artists
Everyone I talk to that loves Nancy P’s Cafe, also loves that the cafe features local artists’ work on the walls. Artwork rotates every couple of months to keep the atmosphere ever-evolving and support as many local artists as possible. All proceeds from artwork sold at Nancy P’s goes directly to the artist. “Our benefit is getting to enjoy the beauty each day!” exclaims Katy.
Speaking of local artists, after featuring the artwork of “Local Favorite” Megan Marie Meyers a few years back, Katy and Tommy commissioned her to create their logo. This playful image is a nod to the fantastic duo behind Nancy P’s Cafe.
“I think the most important part of Nancy P’s is the comfort and community feel it has. Our amazing customers and employees are a huge part of that,” says Katy.
During the current crisis, Nancy P’s Cafe has adjusted to take-out service. You can call to order in advance, or order from their pick-up window on the Milwaukee side of their building. Nancy P’s Cafe is located on the east side of Newport Market, at 1054 NW Milwaukee Ave.
Last week, I popped over to Nancy P’s Cafe to pick up a dozen shortbread cookies and had the pleasure of talking with Katy in more detail. She was so genuinely grateful to our local community and the support her cafe has received during this pandemic. She was telling me stories of customers calling in and leaving very large tips (without necessarily ordering food) to split amongst the staff. There have been several instances where good samaritans call in and donate $500 worth of sandwiches to healthcare workers, first responders and other essential workers. Now that’s paying it forward in more ways than one!
“We love to support local, and we love Katy and her family dearly. Please go support them during this crazy time. And you MUST try one of their shortbread cookies. We LOVE Nancy P’s!!” -Charissa T
